Pie Guy Reviews: Oliver’s Bakehouse Kohimarama

What’s up pie lovers. The bad weather today did not stop my ravenous desire to eat a pie.

Oliver’s bakehouse in Kohimarama/Mission Bay used to be my go to spot before school. I would regularly wolf down an 8:15am steak and cheese pie before class. The pies weren’t that amazing so as soon as I graduated from school I never went back, but I decided to go back today to see if anything has changed.

Boy, this pie was utterly sensational.

Firstly, it’s worth mentioning how aesthetically pleasing this pie was. Being perfectly spherical with a beautiful golden brown colour, it was a spectacle.

Now, this pie hands down had the best pastry out of any pie I have ever had. It was perfectly cooked, with a perfect golden brown top and marvellous simultaneous crispiness and softness all around. Despite not being overly thick, its structural integrity was in no way compromised by the large amount of gravy.

That brings me to my next point of discussion: the gravy. Firstly, there was just so much of it. Lots of gravy can be bad when the pastry cannot hold it, compromising the “eatability” of a pie. However, this was not an issue with this pie. In fact, I was able to eat this pie one-handed while being a car passenger. If that isn’t a testament to the pie’s structural integrity, I don’t know what is. The gravy itself was stellar with a great consistency and a deep, rich, meaty taste. I have to give it basically a 0 on the jelly rating as well (10 being most jelly-like).

There was also so much tender steak. It felt like each bite I took had a piece of steak in it, making the $6.50 price tag feel like a bargain to be honest.

One of the best ways to determine if a pie is really spectacular is whether or not you instantly want another one as soon as you finish it. I felt a deep sorrow within my soul after I finished this pie, and I really wanted another one.

I am unable to decide whether or not I think that this pie is better than my current no. 1 pie from Richberry cafe. I really thought no pie would ever get close to Richberry’s, but this pie amazed me. I will have to try them side by side to make a decision.

Happy long weekend. I urge everyone to try Oliver’s Bakehouse.
