Pie Guy Reviews: Cascades Bakery & Cafe Pakuranga

🎶It’s pie day pie day, gotta get down on pie day🎶

Today I voyaged to Cascades Road Bakery. I felt pretty gangsta with one hand on the leopard print steering wheel in my girlfriend’s car. I have been meaning to go here for a while and today I finally did. Shoutout to u/peachypete1 for the recommendation.

I had to get a regular steak pie and not a steak and cheese because there weren’t many pies left. When I walked in and saw only a handful of pies left I was expecting big things!

The absence of cheese did not let this pie down. The gravy was purely magnificent. A wave of pure bliss rushed through my body as soon as it hit my taste buds. I’m not even joking guys. This pie should be classed a Class A drug. It was like my tastebuds didn’t even need to make their mind up or ask questions.

The gravy was so rich and extremely meaty in taste. I find that rich, meaty pies are still always slightly too salty for my liking. But that was not the case with this pie. It was perfectly seasoned and just overall bloody sensational.

Not gonna lie, it probably has the best jelly rating out of any pie I’ve ever reviewed. No traces of jelly whatsoever. The meaty taste lasted in my mouth for a long time too.

This pie also probably had the most steak out of any pie I’ve ever had- there was more steak than gravy. To be honest, I probably would have liked a bit LESS steak because of how good the gravy was. But I can’t complain. A couple of pieces were ever so slightly gristly, but that is me grasping for a downside.

It had beautiful golden pastry with a good thickness all round, though it was a bit stale because it was one of the last pies of the day (not the bakery’s fault). The eating experience would have definitely been elevated if it was fresher, though.

Another mildly negative point I have is that the pie was slightly lacking in height, especially compared to my last pie from Oliver’s bakehouse which was a monster. It was still a solid size, but the pie was so good I just wanted it to be bigger and last longer. Bear in mind the pie was $5.50.

We seem to be on a streak of top notch pies. Each time I do a review I think to myself, “Surely the next one can’t be this good.” But I have been proven wrong again.

I give this pie 9.5/10, with the slightly stale pastry holding the pie back from its full potential. I might have to come back and see if it deserves a 10 since I bought the pie towards the end of the day.

Cheers everyone and thanks for reading🥧
